Finally, recreational cod fishing periods are announced!

The Atlantic cod fishing season will be open during a most interesting time this year.

Fisheries and Ocean Canada catches up to 5 cod for a total of 15 groundfish per fisher

per day from June 24 to July 8, 2020, and from July 17 to August 7, 2020 from sunrise to sunset.

This fish is highly prized for its white flesh and typical taste. Given the large amount of capelin currently present along the coast of Matane, we can expect a good fishing season.

Although found in relatively shallow waters (5-6 meters) these days, cod retreat to the depths of the sea for the rest of the year. The targeted fish will then reach 18 to 24 inches.

In the past, cod also called La Gloutonne was generally larger than Atlantic salmon. In the archives of our Lelièvre family appear photos of cod with a height of 5 feet and more. My great-grandfather Amedé, said then that they were not the most drip but that the jowls were worth it!

We are waiting for you this summer to help us find a Gloutonne!

Do not leave aside the rock cod “Ogac”, which is abundant all year round on rocky bottoms and near obstacles such as docks. Characterized by a pecked color and a rounded tail, this fish usually reaches 18 inches in length and is very voracious. It is also delicious! This species is not subject to the fishing period and catch limit for Atlantic cod.

Happy fishing!
